About
I am a motivated world language teacher who has taught Spanish for over 30 years. I am certified with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages as an Advanced Speaker of Spanish. I am also a certified educator of Spanish in both Georgia and Tennessee. I have an educational doctorate in instructional leadership, and I am an educational specialist in curriculum design. I have seen the need for world language instructional coaches in public schools for 30 years, and I am compelled to offer my services as a World Languages Education Advocate. I believe that my professional background and industrialist drive make me the ideal consultant.
Spanish Haven History
I began Spanish in 8th grade: a very progressive middle school in 1979. I I had no idea my “love affair” with the Spanish language, my fascination with Spanish history, and wonder for the entire Spanish-speaking world lay ahead. To my knowledge, as well as “23 + Me”, there is not a drop of Hispanic blood in my body. It’s all a welcomed, adopted 2nd existence for Haven Caylor-Brown. I studied Spanish off and on through high school and college. Instead of teaching history like I had trained for during my undergraduate degree, my first teaching job was instructing middle school children with Spanish. The rest is Haven Caylor-Brown history of teaching Spanish for 31 years.
1990 – I spent the summer at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. It’s was/is a part of the University City. Like many European and world school systems, they use a 10- point grading scale instead of a 100 point grading scale in the United States. I finished my study with a 9.3. I was ecstatic! I so want Sean, Ammon, and Carter to experience Madrid with me. I know it was not meant to be, but I knew I could easily adapt to living in Madrid. This city holds a special place in my heart. Hoping and praying God will get me back there to enjoy the city with my family.
1994- Medical Mission to Guatemala
1995- My awesome year in Yucatan. I taught business English at a wonderful preparatory school The National College of Technical Professional Education – CONALEP in Spanish. I lived only 20 miles from the now majorly excavated Ek Balaam – wonderfully unique classical Mayan Ruins. The more famous Chichén Itzá was about 90 minutes away. I still long to spend time in Mérida, Yucatan’s capital.
2009- My last visit to Spain. While on a cruise, my family and I spent a day in Málaga then another in Cádiz.
2011- My last visits to Spanish-speaking countries. The cruise’s itinerary included, Santiago, Chile, Valparaiso, Chile, Ushuaia, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay.
